Roasting Sugar Pumpkins for Homemade Purée

I know that many of you may make your own pumpkin purée but there are also many folks who never have… in fact, I actually never made my own until this year! And it is just the BEST. The flavor of homemade vs. canned is worlds better.

The only pumpkins that you want to use for making pies and other baked goods are called sugar pumpkins, NOT the big carving pumpkins that you get for Halloween. Sugar pumpkins weigh in at about 1-2 pounds each… cute little buggers!

Keep in mind that all pumpkins are different. So you may get a really sweet one and you may also get one that’s not so sweet. The color of the flesh also varies. If you find some that you love, go back and buy a bunch. Then you can jar your own if you’re feeling industrious!

Anyway, I thought it fitting to share this with you during Pumpkin Week.

Here are the step-by-step instructions to making your own purée…

Healthy trails,

  1. FYI, although sugar pumpkins are sweeter and cook more quickly, you CAN make delicious puree from the big carving pumpkins. I used to actually carve ours on Halloween, set them out for the neighborhood goblins to see, and cook them the next morning. Nobody died, and the puree was delicious in pumpkin bread, pumpkin roll, etc.

Good to know, Suzanne! Thanks! 🙂

  3. I find that sometimes the puree from the pumpkin is a bit to watery, especially for baking. So I will line a colander with cheesecloth, and put the puree into it, then let the water drip off until I have the consistency I like. I have also used a coffee filter when I didn't have cheesecloth on hand.

Wow! Another great tip. Thanks Jenny!

  5. I ended up steaming mine but scooping flesh same way……used the skins to make chips by placing skin side down on baking paper (on baking sheet) and sprinkling with a little seasoning…..waste not want not….and they taste awesome…..now off to try baking and making some goodies with the puree. GOing to try the breakfast bars and nog tonight and perhaps pumpkin pie later in the week….. 🙂
